This is how all hole cutters should be designed. The open design allows the clay to easily drop out of the tool. The tapered design allows you to use one tool to cut differently-sized holes. To cut holes of identical size, wrap a piece of masking tape around the tool at the chosen diameter, as one does with a drill bit to control drill depth.
