Cryolite is a powdered material derived from granite. It is a strong fluxing agent with a very low melting point. Cryolite is used in frits and glazes, and is a source of aluminum and insoluble sodium. Sometimes used as an opacifier for enamels, or to produce crackle glazes. It can become volatile with silica and cause blistering in larger amounts.

Cryolite is sometimes used used as an additive in glazes that helps to create artificial reduction in electric firings achieved through cryolite's lack of oxygen.
