Black Iron Oxide can create varied effects depending on the conditions. As a glaze component in oxidation firings it can produce red and in reduction firings, black. One of the most common colorants in pottery. As a body stain in clay bodies, depending on concentration, it can produce fired colours ranging from light grey to brown-grey, dark brown to almost-black.

NOTE: In its powdered form, black iron oxide can cause skin, eye and respiratory tract irritation and sensitization. Please use protective coverings when handling this chemical.
