Spectrum's 500 Series Underglazes are all lead free, dinnerware safe, and A/P non-toxic when covered with a clear glaze. Underglazes can be used at almost any temperature range and can be applied to bisque or raw clay. Two to three coats are required for opaque, vibrant colours. The samples shown are at Cone 05, but these underglazes can be fired from low-temperature (Cone 06/04) to high-temperature (Cone 9/10). Some variation in colour will occur at higher temperatures and also different clear coats and thicknesses can affect the hue of each underglaze.

I started out with buying the smallest size of the white underglaze, but I quickly finished it because I like to use the white underglaze to mix my own hues of underglaze. I find that all of the Spectrum underglazes that I own can be mixed well together to create different colours, so it is worth it for me to stock up on a pint of white underglaze at a time. I do find that instead of painting the entire bisqueware with white as the background colour (and then painting colours on top of the white), it's better to just put the white where you need it, or use it for mixing. When I painted the entire bisqueware piece in white and then did other colours of Spectrum underglaze on top of the white, I found the colours were muted.
